Navigating Mid-Life Transitions: Calling, Work & Adult Spirituality

Offered by Vocatio Creation and Evangelical Community Church in partnership withHKPES
2 October 2010
Space is limited•No translation is provided(座位有限英語演講不設傳譯)

This is a seminar for Christians at all stages of life but particularly those who are facing mid-life transitions. The seminar will consider the classic principles and wisdom of good vocational discernment and the dynamic character of the calling of Christ, whether at home or at work, to the church or the marketplace, to a single life or married life. The particular focus will be on the middle years – how this wisdom can provide us with good counsel and encouragement to navigate these years with confidence.

Session I: Discerning Vocation (9.30-11.00am)
An overview of the principles of vocational discernment. How do we know and discern the calling of God upon our lives when it comes to our work? How can a dynamic adult spirituality more intentionally inform and shape the contours of our lives as we make sense of the competing demands on our time and attention?

Session II: The Mid-life Years (11.15am-12.45pm)
An examination of how the classic wisdom and principles of vocational discernment have relevance to women and men in mid-life. We will explore how these can be some of the best years of our lives, but also how they can be difficult, challenging and vulnerable years. What are the unique features of vocational discernment in this stage of life?

Session III: Gaining Wisdom & Encouragement from Good Conversation (Workshop) (2.00-3.30pm)
Drawing on Courage and Calling: The Study Guide (by Soo-Inn Tan & Gordon Smith), we will learn of the value of a discussion partner through guided reflection on the application of what we have been learning in this seminar.

Session IV: From Fear to Courage – Knowing the Presence & Benediction of God for Our Journey (3.45-5.00pm)
This session will probe more fully how fear is the greatest obstacle to the fulfillment of our vocations and equip us to name our fears and respond to them intentionally. We will also consider how our mid-life years need to also be a season in which anticipate the exercise of vocation in our senior years.
